Some facts about teletherapy

Due to COVID-19 First Step Therapy has adapted to Teletherapy. Below are some questions frequently asked about Teletherapy.

What is teletherapy?

Teletherapy uses video conferencing as a medium for providing therapy. One of the benefits of teletherapy is that you can receive therapy from the comfort of your home. Research has shown that teletherapy yields the same results as traditional therapy. Teletherapy can be a solution for busy parents and individuals who live far from therapy clinics.

What do you need as a client/parent to use teletherapy?
All you need is a reliable internet connection, a computer and a webcam. You need a quiet space and possibly a high chair in order to stay in within camera view.
Do the parents need to be present for each session?

Parents and/or caregivers are a key component of therapy especially when it comes to toddlers. At least one parent or caregiver should be present during each session. Therapy sessions are designed in a way that empowers parents and caregivers to feel comfortable using tips and strategies taught by the Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational therapists.

What is the best thing about teletherapy?

Teletherapy allows you the opportunity to learn about all of the different ways you can use your child’s toys and objects in your home as tools for therapy. Your therapist will gather a toy inventory in order to plan for therapy sessions that you can easily implement at home. Furthermore, you will begin to identify teaching moments during everyday activities. It is fun, versatile and a time saver!

If there are any questions or concerns regarding teletherapy please don’t hesitate to reach out to your therapists.

Stay safe!
